Theadra Fleming served as Vice President, President, and Secretary for the Great Lakes African American Quilters’ Network. She was also a prolific and outstanding quilter.
In a 2011 GLAAQN Bindings Newsletter, Theadra talked about herself as a person and a quilter.
“I taught myself to quilt in 1997 and was spiritually moved by the Roland Freeman exhibit (in 1997 I think) at our African American Museum. Since then, I have made close to 115 pieces, in varying sizes with bright, colorful fabrics. I am an admitted fabric-olic and offer no excuses. However, I have slowed down considerably over the past five years. I am a retired nurse, working the last 14 years of my career in Detroit, at a school for pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children. The young women became the first, of a fair number, of my quilting students.
My motto: keep it simple. I want the quilt top to do the shouting! I believe we
all have a creative essence, and when our heart is open, it reveals itself. I’m
excited to be among such energetic and positive people. I am excited to witness the creativity that each of us can foster, and encourage among ourselves and others. I am honored that each of us can show respect and compassion as human beings, that we can be unconditional in our love for each other as spirits of this magnificent universe and that we matter to each other. As we venture forward, let’s harness our collective positive energy to keep alive the vision of our founders, guide us in our decisions and embrace the uniqueness we all possess. I, you, and we are responsible for our success.”
