Join us for the 2024 Virtual Michigan Heritage Awards Ceremony! We will be celebrating the work of 2024 awardees Kitty Donohoe (Michigan folksongs and lore, Ann Arbor), the Great Lakes African American Quilters’ Network (African American quilting and education, Livonia), and Rosa Lopez Killips (Mexican ballet folklórico and Spanish flamenco dance, St. Johns) [posthumous award]. While hometown celebrations have already taken place in-person, the Michigan Traditional Arts Program hosts a virtual ceremony to allow the full cohort of awardees to gather and to bring in community members who were unable to attend the public ceremonies. Hear from the awardees and their nominators about their work and the impact of the folk and traditional arts on their lives and communities.
The Michigan Heritage Awards honor individuals who continue their family and community folk traditions with excellence through practice and teaching, or individuals who are recognized as outstanding community leaders in the maintenance, documentation, or presentation of traditional arts. The program was established in 1985 to call attention to Michigan's exceptional tradition bearers and supporters of traditional culture whose contributions to our state's heritage had not been recognized previously. The awards are produced annually by the Michigan Traditional Arts Program of Michigan State University, Michigan's statewide folklife organization.
We hope to see you at the Zoom celebration on Sunday afternoon.
